    Newborn Session Suggestions!

Thank you for booking me to take your newborn photos! I cannot wait to work with you and share the beautiful images of your new little one with you!

    About Your Session

    • I ask that someone contact me regarding scheduling as soon as you go into labor, this helps me to look ahead at my schedule a bit. I like to have my sessions planned as close to the time of birth as possible, when babies are still teeny, new and sleepy.
    • Newborn sessions are done within the first 14 days of being born for several reasons: They are more likely to stay asleep and cooperate during their poses, they still like to be curled up and don’t mind being posed and their flaky skin or baby acne is usually not too prominent yet! After 14 days old, they are more alert and less cooperative.
    • Newborn sessions are done in your home, so I know I need to be flexible with space but there are some things that I'll need when I get there.  I need outlets and a minimum of 10 ft of open space and as much natural light as possible. I do bring lighting with me but sessions are easiest when this is used as a suppliment and not the mail light!
    • Babies sleep best when the room is nice and warm. I will have you turn up your heater to approximately 80 degrees in the area we are shooting, and in summer I will shut off any air conditioning. I will also bring a small space heater to warm blankets and alleviate air drafts.
    • I book my newborn sessions around 10am generally and am free until about 2. Usually set up and break town take about a half hour on both sides.

    Before the Session!

    • One of the most imperative things is to keep baby awake 2-3 hours before their session so that they are nice and sleepy. Do not feed them until right before we begin the session, usually while I am setting up. This will keep baby nice and full during their session.
    • Please have a pacifier handy. Even if baby does not intend on using one permanently, it is often convenient during pictures to keep baby calm and soothed for the 2-3 hours they will be taking photos. They also make adorable pouty faces when you take them out!  If you do not have one, I have new ones I keep on hand.
    • Please have some extra diapers, wipes, burp cloths and rags handy, as babies will have accidents during their sessions. I'll have some as well! Newborn sessions are often in the nude so messes are normal! I use a lot of Dreft in this job!
    • Please prep baby in the easiest to remove clothing prior to the session, preferable button down or zip down pajamas, this will make it easier to transition to the outfits we have planned for the session and leave less lines on the babies skin.
    • I always use a beanbag for newborn shoots, so I’ll bring this along with a couple of clean blankets. If you have any blankets on hand that you think might work well or any other props you want to incorporate, please let me know.
    •  If you’re breastfeeding and are open to having bottles with breast milk on hand, great!  If you are exclusively breast feeding then please be ready to feed if necessary.
    • If you have older siblings that you would like photographed with your newborn we will do these shots FIRST. Cream, ivory or white and other neutrals are recommended for older siblings, either dresses or with solid color pants. The more texture the better (knit, lace, etc). They’ll be barefoot, so no need to look for clean shoes.
    • After the older siblings are photographed I will ask that children be removed from the room we are working in if possible, as they can have a hard time being patient and quiet while I work with their siblings!
    • I usually suggest that we begin or end with portraits of the family/parents with the newborn. A white/cream short sleeve shirt is suggested for Dads and a white/cream tank or blouse top is suggested for Moms. I am also open to more artistic poses and outfits, if you'd like them!
